Hi Bob_yan
The walker appears EF-45 to me , but all of the hairlines lead me to think that it has had an abrasive cleaning,, this will net the coin for grade anywhere from 2 to 5 point lower .
The Merc, is a vf-30 or 35 but also shows hairlines same type of net grade .
I see that the coins are in 2x2's and some of the scratches maybe in the mylar, if you can please take photo's of the coins out of the holders,, from pics it is very hard to tell what is on the coin and what is on the holder,
If these hairlines are not on the coins then My opinon of the grades are before net reduction.

Dear metalman, thanks so much for your information and grading. I am new to silver coins. I collect world coins. I like American coins and I just hope to have one coin of each style. It does not need to be of high value. It only need to be of good looking and acceptable grade. I bought the 2 coins from a 78 year old collector in China. He has collected the half dollar, quarter & dimes of 1940s almost for every year. It is really very difficult to collect so much in China. Now as he is old, he wants to sell them to other collectors.
I don't know whether these coins have been cleaned. I still have no idea of this. I will take off the holder and take pictures again. So for the silver coins, if they are dirty, should I clean them or not. If yes, how should I clean them ? Thanks.

Hi bob_yan
Cleaning is a bad thing for coins ,, do not clean them !! Cleaning severely diminishes value of the coins.
Always glad to help bob.

Hi bob
It is best to do nothing unless the coins are being damaged by something like PVC contamination ,, then Only for noble metal coins (Silver,Gold ,platinum) a soak in acetone may help.
I however do not recommend any form of cleaning !! for simple circulation patina .

One method of cleaning coins if they have a lot of junk on them is to soak them in cooking oil but it takes a lot of time before the junk is gone.Like 4 months or more.Just an idea.

The Walker has definitely been scoured. It has EF details. I can't tell anything about the dime because of ignorance, but I'll guess at VF.

I'd say the Walker has VF+ details ( a little too much wear on the leg for EF in my opinion) and the Mercury has F+ details (I believe the diagonal bands need to be a little more visible for a VF grade). Both have definitely been cleaned in my opinion.
