I've been looking through a lot of coins from the 70s and found that a few of them have the bottom of the words "states" and "of" worn smooth into the coin and the "E" is completely missing from "E Pluribus Unum". Just below that the coin is worn on that part of the memorial only. The rest of the coin is is good condition. The coin pictured is the most dramatic one, but there are others where only the words were affected and not the memorial.
It is possible that something wore these words and that piece of the memorial away but managed to leave the rest of the coin raised and intact? Or is this some sort of defect going back to when the coin was minted? Thanks for your help.

Here are a couple closeups of the coin.

This very common. It is not from die wear, but from the die being filled with a substance like grease. When the coin is struck with this blockage, the devices can't form because the cavity of the die is filled in with this substance. Happens a lot. Sometimes harder to find one that this doesn't happen to. It happens. Dies are negatives of the coins they create. The devices are deep into the die and the fields are the outside edge of the coin. Thus scratches on the field that flow through a device can be seen on a coin and you wonder how did that happen without disturbing the device. It is on just the field, the outside of the die. Cleanings, polishings and abuse usually affect the fields and not the devices deep into the die.

It's what I believe is called a 'struck through' Grease Filled Die.
