This auction is for a token but it makes a point about establishing a rough date.

http://cgi.ebay.com/Massachusets-Co...mZ8405022839

The seller claims the token dates to 1800. Is that reasonable, if it is a "Massachusetts Token". The answer is no - simply because of the way this token was struck. The high thin rim and the perfect circular strike indicates the token was struck in a collar. That technology was introduced in England in about 1796 but was not used in the US until 1836.

This token is usually dated to the last quarter of the 1800s. I haven't looked it up, but that is the date I recall.

Is it possible that this is a modern copy of an older token?

As I recall - this token was actaully made in Massachusetts nearer 1900 than 1800 but the reference comes from an auction catalog that I have not located. If this one is in Ruklau, I can't find it.

As for being a modern copy of an older token I really doubt it. The style of the tree is reminiscent of the colonial issues but it is a much newer style.
