I've been trying to improve the photo catalog of my collection so I took a few items out of the safe deposit box for new shots. There is still room for improvement but the images are looking better. Here's the Carson City double eagle I purchased in Long Beach back before the turn of the century. It was originally in an NGC holder and it later crossed to PCGS at the same grade. For 100 Brownie points, WHAT IS THAT GRADE?

Can't decide between an AU-58 or MS-62. Gorgeous coin! Sadly, I don't own any CC coins, and the visit at the mint made me want to change that.

I want to say AU-58 due the the flattened looking areas in the hair (it may just be due to the pic) otherwise I think it could make MS-61. Beautiful Coin! I love CC coins. Hopefully I can add a Carson City Gold coin to the collection someday.

If you don't mind me asking how much did you pay for it. I myself was thinking of selling my 1904 MS-63 P Mint and buying something with a little more history behind it such as yours at the Philadelphia Expo.

Beautiful coin. I'm seeing some wear in the letters of LIBERTY and throughout the hair. I'm going to say AU-55.

Quote: If you don't mind me asking how much did you pay for it. According to my records my cost was $1050. Of course, the price of gold was in the $500-600 range back then so this coin was going for double the bullion value. If you can find one for that price you should definitely buy it, or else email me so I can jump on it! I selected this coin because it had superior eye appeal and very few bag marks compared with other CC double eagles I had viewed. I think it is quite a PQ example and it remains one of my favorite coins.

Beautiful coin. If PC crossed it then I'm going with AU58.
The size of the images probably makes the the bag marks look a lot worse than they are but the coin looks to have a few rubs that say circulated or mis-handled to me.
Plus you hinted big time with the price. No way an MS CC Double Eagle goes for any less than 3 times melt!

Echizento wins those Brownie points! My coin is an AU-55 according to both NGC and PCGS. There is very slight rub on Miss Liberty's hair and coronet as shown in the photo. Still, I think it's very PQ for a 55 and I would not think twice if I saw this coin in an AU-58 holder.

I agree. You tend to purchase very nice coins for the assigned grades from what I've seen. Way to go!

That's awesome. I'm definitely a fan of the gold variety.
