Something completely obliterated the rim and a patch on the lower obverse. The reverse looks completely normal. Even in the likely even that this is just post-mint damage, it'd be interesting to think what caused this.

Just as interesting to consider is that the rim is a bit thicker toward the obverse--there's a strange slit that runs around the entirety of the rim that almost makes it look like the obverse was cut off of one nickel and slapped on another, so to speak:

Looks like damage on the obverse. The rim is definately interesting though.

The metal on the obverse outer edge has been pushed, scraped outward to give that edge.Looks neat

It was probably played with on a grinding wheel or damaged by hand with a file. It accounts for the lines and it accounts for the edge being pushed the way it was.
