On a website I check from time-to-time, it lists two varieties for the numeral '4' on 1940-S wheat cents: (1) crosslet 4 and (2) plain 4. Apparently 1940-D are all of the crosslet type and 1941 are all of the plain type. For 1940-S, it sounds like the trumpet-tail serif S is always associated with the crosslet type.

Looking at a few '4's, I can't tell the difference. And a quick glance at coppercoins' website revealed nothing, although there were lots of good pictures of the date on various LWC.

Does anybody know anything about this possible variety?

What's the website? There is different mintmark styles for the 'S' in 1941.

Yes, and for several of the years 1940 to 1952.

I know both exist, but finding examples right now is just not in the cards for me. I have way too much work going on to dig some out.

The difference is this...the 'crosslet' 4 has serifs on the right end of the horizontal cross bar. The 'plain' 4 does not have said serifs, and has a smaller extension of this right facing horizontal bar.

Confused? Just take out a 1940D and compare it to your 1940S cents. You will eventually find the difference if looking at the 4.

Excellent -- thanks a lot. I had noticed that flared right end on the crossbar. I'll try to check if I have both 1940-S types.

I checked all of the 1940 "P", "D" and "S" Cents on Copper Coins and all of the ones that show the Date have Crosslet "4's" except the 1940-P DDO #3 which appears to be a Plain "4"! Therefore it appears that both Varieties exist for the 1940-P Cents as well.
