Key dates in ANY grade are fantastic investments. Sometimes it's even a better idea to pick up AG3 and G4 keys as these will go up on a percentage basis as their higher grade counterparts not to mention, there is a larger collector base for such coins come time to sell(when it comes to keys, most collectors just want one or need one).
I purchased a 1916-D Merc PCGS AG3 a few years ago and it has gone up in value nicely. I know very few folks who have this coin in MS63FB!

MGT As you might have noticed, I am on the rampage for Buffalo nickel lately. I bought a 1921 S for around 120.00 as that is all I could see spending on it. You can read the date easy and see the mint mark and it is slabbed and graded by PCGS. While I bought a 1924 S for $21.95 last night in VG it would cost well over $1.000.00 in XF. I try to buy the best coin I can afford at the lowest price I can find that I like to look at.
I really think it is important that you like the way the coin looks to you.

To help complete my restored Buffalo collection, I recently purchased a 1918/7-D restored Buffalo because I liked the way it looked. It has a nice date with overdate visible, and the price was right. I doubt I'll restore one anytime soon. I try not to purchase non-original coins, but sometimes when it comes to keys, I make an exception if the price is right.

with every one that these are great investments. Some times Lady Luck plays a role when buying what one considers a lower grade key date coin. I bought this 1948 Canadian silver dollar from the auction pictures ( the ones in black and white ) When I received the coin I was in From the auction pictures there was no hint of the natural toning on this coin and the grade turned out better than I expected. Here are the before and after pictures. Some times good things happen

never wrong when picking up the keys... You can always upgrade later...

In all reality that is the most important thing about collecting key dated coins.

British key-date coins sometimes change value, I don't know why but.. a couple of years ago 1920 Florin and 1931 Shillnig was rarer and more expensive, now they are cheaper than what it was offered two years ago
