Is it wrong to buy low grade keydates coins? I'm guilty of this.

No. They need to be loved and given a home also.

Remember the thread of your WORST coin?
I posted up several keys that are in about as low of shape as you could possibly find. Still key dates so they will always have a certain draw to us as collectors.
Going by the crossroads of investment vs collection it changes the outlook. Appreciation among key dates is a long road uphill. Just the higher the grade, the steeper the hill. Find a happy balance and you will hedge your collections long term position.

MGT As you might have noticed, I am on the rampage for Buffalo nickel lately. I bought a 1921 S for around 120.00 as that is all I could see spending on it. You can read the date easy and see the mint mark and it is slabbed and graded by PCGS. While I bought a 1924 S for $21.95 last night in VG it would cost well over $1.000.00 in XF. I try to buy the best coin I can afford at the lowest price I can find that I like to look at. I really think it is important that you like the way the coin looks to you.

I think if you can find true 'keys' in the lower grades at reasonable prices, they represent a good buy. No damaged or cleaned coins though.

I try to buy the best looking coin that I can afford at that time. Next time, I may be able to afford a better one. I then pass the extra on to someone else or hold on to it. (Sounds good, but come to think of it, I always keep it!) r

Given the "generous" quality of my paycheck, if it wasn't O.K. to buy low quality keys, I wouldn't have any!!

as a "per type" colelctor, I rarely need tu buy "key dates" only when the coin has been minted one year or so.. but for "H" mintmark coins of Britan, I sometiems buy the low quality because of the price.. I find nothing wrong in buying low grades for key dates.. If you are missing one and on a tight budget, why not?

Low grade coins of any type should not be collected so just stop now and send them all to me.

Something that can be turned in for a small pittance to make up for slaving your adult life away...

over 90% of my key dates are in G4 or below I have usually been lucky enough to pick them up at a significant discount I think any coin with a mintage of under 100,000 is fairly unique no matter what its condition. Most of my non core key dates have issues such as cleaning or damage but they are just as well loved as those in their plastic coffins.

As already said, buying keys & semi key at reasonable prices is completely acceptable
