I don't think I've posted this one before. This was an ebay purchase. What grade do you think it deserves?

I'm going to say it would grade VF-20.
Rest in Peace

I would say in the XF range detail wise, but I don't see any luster and the surfaces look a bit funny to me. Those dark spots are a bit disturbing. I hope they aren't corrosion, and maybe the picture makes them look more negative than they do in hand.

My favorite coin type, so I'll give it my best amateur shot based on my own personal way of judging Standing Liberties. Flat leg, abdomen, and face; half of chain mail missing, bottom of foot not entirely distinct from the platform she's standing on, most dots on outer rim of shield still there but emblem in middle of shield almost completely gone. Eagle's nice, detail on left wing and breast are minimal but since the rubric for grading SLQs seems to be predominantly focused on the details of the obverse it's not particularly detrimental to the grade--I've seen (and own) AUs with about that much reverse feather wear.

Overall, XF40 details, may only command a VF30 value because of lack of luster and dark deposits.

Thanks for the comments. The seller called this an EF which I think might be just a tad optimistic. The dark deposits are not detrimental IMO, they just give it an original crusty look which is not out of place at this level of wear. There is no corrosion or other surface problem that I see. The obverse beading at the rim is complete which is not always the case for some coins approaching AU. I'm comfortable grading it as a VF-35.

I have a soft spot for pre-1925 SLQs. As a kid I saw 1925-1930 quarters turn up in my parents' change from time to time and I could always read those dates. The older SLQs also showed up, always dateless. I never did find one that I could read. Eventually I forked over maybe $2 at a shop to buy a 1920 in about F-15 grade. It was special just because I could actually read the date!
Rest in Peace
