Yours truly (nickelsearcher) has just passed through 86,000 coins searched (2150 rolls) .... and still no 1938-P Jefferson!

I have a Masters Degree in Applied Statistics ..... so I've done the math ...... should have found 7 by now. Where have they all gone?

I have a theory ..... the US Homeland Security Department has established a special "Top Secret" overland transportation screening barrier at the borders to the State of Maryland (where I live). They are screening for dangerous stuff that might enter the Nation's Capital .....

Alas .... their detection limits for 'bad stuff' include all 1938-P Jefferson's .... so they are being diverted to _22_ and CND and others who are collectively laughing their heads off at my expense.

To add to the Maryland misery ..... I suspect that all boxes that do happen to escape the border screen are marked with a special die that alerts the bank tellers to the presence of a 1938-P Jefferson ..... so when I approach the teller for a box of nickels my picture comes up on their screen ...... and that's when the snickering occurs as they prowl through the boxes to find ONLY those that do not contain any 1938-P coins.

To make it even worse .... there must be some kind of outer-space bad karma machine here in my basement .... because I ran upstairs many a time to show the family my '38 .... only to find it morphed suddenly into a 1978 or such.

OK .... fantasy excuses mode is now 'off'

Tell me .... who out there has actually found a 1938-P Jefferson in a bank roll?

Did it take you 86,000 coins?

Thanks for listening.

David

ive found about a quarter roll of 38p's so far and I've been searching for almost 2 1/2 years. I even managed to find a BU 1938 this past weekend along with an AU 1955p. Patience is the key, I'm sure you'll find rolls of them in no time, perhaps even a 1938 proof. I actually found a 1950 proof before I found the business strike, so you really never do know what will show up and when.

I got my second set 38 P in change at a McDonalds and my third set one from the change drawer at work. Are you sure you weren't something evil to nickels in a past life?

I remember getting a number of them in searches. Once I got a few rolls with a good number of them 1953 S 1952 S and some other odds and ends at a hoagie shop 20 years ago. I still have most of them because I kept the rolls as I found them.
One of my favorites was an AU/BU 1938 I got in a milk box delivering milk. I named it Jackson, cause that was the customers name.
If you don't find one and it is odd, I can help you out.

Im still at just one... I remember it was in one of my very first boxes and I've yet to find another since. Just be patient, it will show up. It took me 38,000 coins before I found my first 1941D and when it finally showed I found 4 more in the same 100 rolls. Its just the odds not falling in your favor.

I haven't found a 1938 in years. But I remember where I got my first one. It was from a Coke machine at a bowling alley in SW Pennsylvania in 1973. I was so excited finally finding one for my Whitman folder!

Finding a 38-P in change is what got me started nickel roll searching. I think we all have those elusive coins that we need but escape our grasp. The remedy, let's start trading,THAT WILL SHOW THEM HOMELAND SECURITY NICKEL TERRORISTS!

Back in the early 90's I was assigned to Seoul, Korea and in temporary lodging for 30 days waiting for quarters and the family to arrive. Hitting the bars wasn't on my list of fun things to do. There was a game room in the U.S. run hotel (slot machines). I played the nickel machines into the wee hours (after the cashier closed) and ended up with around 3000 nickels. I lugged them back up to the room where I went through them. Repeat this scenario about 10 more times and I found every date/mint except the 50-D. Lots of 38-P's in the mix too. Unfortunately those type machines are a thing of the past.
