But of course this is a copy. I must say that it is a fairly well-made copy, which was obviously struck. According to the ol' RedBook many restrikes were made of this type. So is there a way to figure out if this is an old copy, which carry a wee bit of value, or a modern tourist copy?
ShadowCreator- Yeah, I was thinking that too. But I also wondered if it was possible that some of the older restrikes had been counterstruck with that more recently. Weren't some of the original dies found in the 1960s and used to produce restrikes?
They sell these coins in two coin "copy" sets at the bookstores. The blister pack will say "Money of the Civil War" and includes one of these along with a Indian Head cent (also a copy)of the period. They sell them for $10.
The date is also wrong (wrong font) to be one of the restrikes. Also the early restrikes are worth thousands in their own right. No one would take an early restrike and mark it copy. On thing, this IS a pre-1973 copy since it does not comply with the Hobby Protection Act. (COPY is too small.)
