I've spent some time studying the series, too, and have a few around. Moderate prices for relative rarity is an attraction. Look out for damage. There are lots of bent, warped, dented, weakly struck and scratched coins. These coins seem to have seen more than normal use as screwdrivers and shims. Start carrying a magnifying glass or loupe all the time. The small size is one of the things that keeps me from getting more of them. And dealers love to overgrade them, especially the "Fine" which has no letters visible on shield.
I saw an 1846 not long ago in a shop. The dealer wanted $225 for it in VG but the field had been damaged either by corrosion or graffiti. It was nice to see one anyway.
