I need a capped bust half dollar "Reeded Edge" Coin for my type set. I have been shopping around a bit on the Internet.

I have found a couple 1839's that I am interested in. One is a XF-40 the other is a AU-55. I have noticed there is a large price differential between the two. Both in Price guides and asking prices.

I could secure the XF-40 in the low $200's, and the AU-55 will most likely be at or near the $400 mark, both coins being problem free.

Are the higher grades (AU) really worth double the price than an XF example? are they twice as hard to find in AU? Would the future upside of the AU be substantially greater than a XF?

I know the decision is entirely on me, but I just wanted to see what you guys think about the issue.
Rest in Peace

I think what really sets AU apart from XF in many cases is the amount of remaining luster, and therefore eye appeal. Because of this, a lot more demand is placed on AU coins with original surfaces. I'm sure they are more scarce, but that doesn't have to be the case for the value to be higher. The 1931-s Lincoln Cent is actually a lot more rare in circulated condition, but is still worth more in Mint State because of demand. I would go with an AU if you can afford it, and make sure it is original and has substantial luster. :-)

I am in the market for one as well. A few posts down, you can read about how I almost had a PCGS AU-53 for $55.....sigh.

Buy the best condition coin you can afford for that type set hole. In the long run you will have a collection that makes you proud and will probably hold it's value better.

The massively key phrase is "hold its value" as jfransch said.

Going up or down in value? Who the heck knows. But the AU will "hold its value" more than the XF. That is something you can bank on.

So buy something now for $200 that you can't sell for a song in 10 years or buy something for $400 that you can easily get $50 for in 10 years time. Which do you prefer?

That does not even make sense. In your scenario, the XF will lose you $200 and the AU will lose you $350. Which would you rather lose? That being said, I can not foresee anything that would cause bust halves to lose value like that.

Buy what you like, I do. Here is my newest addition for my 7070. And I'm quite happy with it!

I decided to purchase the AU-55 example! I liked the luster, and it even has some toning. I will post pics sometime next week when it arrives.
