OK... I've done some research on this coin. From what I can tell, there are not many like it when the year, the mint, the strike, the die, and the condition it is in are figured.

I believe it's a cameo. It seems highly polished and from my limited knowledge would be referred to as "deep mirrored".

It has been taped on the reverse, with a see-through plastic film covering the obverse, then taped over the obverse that was covered onto the inside of a photo album... where it has sat for 30+ years.

When I removed it from the album, I removed the tape, it had left a blackish residue on the reverse.

On the obverse there is a swoosh "U" shaped marking caused by oxidation at about 3 o'clock. What caused the oxidation I do not know. BUT, upon closer inspection, I believe some type of foreign debris(wire or "staple") was struck through.

A close look at the lower leaf, behind the ear where the "U" line travels, appears to be raised. When compared to other Morgans they do not have this feature.

With careful use of a light paint brush hair, under magnifying glass, I moved the hair across the "U" line in question where it's progress was impeded and had to go over the "line-bump". I have come to, in my novice opinion, the conclusion that something was "struck through" and PART of it was retained.

There is more, of what I believe to be evidence, of this "supposed" strike through in question on other parts of this coin, that may support this my newbie theory. Unfortunately the scans, WHICH ARE VERY USEFUL, had to be resized to about 4% of their original size and lost detail.

Also, after hi-res scanning the coin at 1200 dpi, I noticed that the denticles directly under the date, have what seems to be a second strike that was little off. Line dividing the denticles from the edge, does not perfectly travel around the coin.

There seems to be doubling of the ear, the back of the ear, or west part of the ear.

MAINLY... What I want to know is this... If YOU had this coin, would it be worth it to YOU, to send this coin to NCS/SEGS/ANACS (to have it conserved, authenticated, evaluated for error and graded)?

PHOTOS

Forgive the crudity of the photos...

The purple/pink is my girlfriends's phone cover... I used the camera to take these photos...

Did I get the mirror effect? Or is it the cameo effect? You can see the doubling on the ear clearly in this one.

Bad photo... besides the tape residue, this side is cleaner overall, especially in the mirrored fields. Can you see my finger in the coin? It's over the "U" in United.

TAPE RESIDUE VERY NOTICABLE BELOW... in three spots in the 11, 2, and 5 o'clocks.

You can remove that tape residue with a dip in pure acetone. Do a search for "Acetone" and you will find plenty of information. It will not damage your coin in any way. Very nice coin, by the way.

To me? No, it is a common date and, though a nice coin, has a lot going on that could keep it out of a "problem-free" holder.

You would need an MS64 grade from a major TPG (NGC or PCGS) to make it worth the time and money involved in grading. Since that seems unlikely, I'd keep it raw.

Someone else will need to chime in on the doubling and/or variety that may alter my opinions.

P.S. Although SEGS is a legit grading service, don't send it to them. SEGS does not have Tier One creditials among TPG.

I agree it probably wouldn't be worth having this dollar graded. I think I see slight signs of wear on Liberty's cheek and in the reverse fields. If wear is present an AU-58 grade is the best you could expect.

It can't hurt to try pure acetone to remove the tape residue. If you do, please post new images afterwards so we can see the result.

Going to store to get acetone...

I should rinse the coin with clean/fresh acetone, then air dry, right?

As to not leave water spots.

Pictures of after will have to wait til my girlfriend comes back from Florida on Wednesday. I use her phone for the images. I'll do a new scan but I doubt "it" (a new scan after acetone treatment) will look any better.

ALSO... I'll crop a blow up of the spots in question and post them too.

1. I swish the coin around in a small glass of acetone then allow it to soak in the acetone for a few minutes.

2. After removal, hold the coin by it's edges and flush both sides with cool, running water for a few seconds.

3. Finally, place the coin on a clean, dry piece of cloth and pat dry.
