I think the toning is questionable, as is the toning on some of his other offerings.

I wouldn't even say the toning is questionable. Definitely AT. Worse than that, I think the coin is likely counterfeit and it was artificially toned in attempt to disguise the surfaces. I would absolutely avoid this coin like the plague.

After a bit of research, I am almost certain the coin is a counterfeit. The overall graininess on the devices, especially on the reverse eagle. The dentical pattern is weird, but doesn't necessarily mean it is fake. But the "missing" dentical on the obverse 10 oclock is suspicious. I haven't seen that on a genuine coin before, but I could be wrong about that as a counterfeit diagnostic.
What really nails the coffin door shut for me though is the date. It is haphazard and looks "hand cut". I compared it to several genuine certified ones in the heritage archive, and it is not even close. In my opinion, this coin should be reported, but I will wait for others to comment if they disagree.

Definitely 100% artificial toning. Didn't look close enough to determine real or fake, but I would trust johnny's opinion.

The 4 pictures of "dates" on the left are taken from random certified Seated dollars in varying grades from the Heritage archives. Compare those to the one on the right, which is from the OP's ebay link. Look at the holes in the "8" and "6" and the way the numbers are formed. The OP coin's date looks very different. The numbers on the OP coin are more evenly "thick" all the way through, where as the numbers on the genuine coins have much more transition from thin to thick. Also, the date on the OP's coin appears lumpy on the surface, while the authentic ones are smooth and sharp.

I know little about these, but I can see the difference in the date from johnny's Heritage photos; it is dramatic. Has to be a fake!

The overall surface of this coin looks odd possibly cast.

Personally I would not chance buying a fake as so many are. For a Seated dollar online purchase I would go with certified 100% of the time. Too much money at stake to risk.

I thought the date looked funny. After the comparison the top part of the 1 looks suspicious too.

The same seller has an 1880 half dollar for sale of questionable charcter. Once again all the numerals in the date are the wrong font/style

No problem Brewzz! And I totally agree with Cownas here. There are too many Seated dollar fakes out there, some much harder to distinguish than others. It's not worth the risk to purchase one raw. Stick with PCGS, NGC, or ANACS. btw, are you putting together a type set?

Well,I have another one to look at if you guys don't mind: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...TRK:MEWAX:ITI have bought from these guys before, and they don't sell fakes. They are only about 50 miles from me,but I haven't been to their store.I am slowly getting one of every Half and Dollar that I can afford.Maybe a 7070 is in my future, just don't know.I recently got an inheritance, and can afford a few decent coins now... Cheers,Brewzz

I don't see anything on the GSC auction that would make me think its fake and I have never heard of them ever selling a known fake either
