Just passed through 100,000 coins searched (2500 rolls). Here are my updated find rates so far ......

Previous 10,000 Coins Searched:

Found 138 total 1959 and earlier coins. Of these, I found five (5) 'specials'; 2-War Silver, 2-1938D and of course the fabulous XF/AU 1950D that showed up last night. I'm still smiling about that find.

Overall Find Rates:

Overall find rate is 1.273%. This equates to 1 find every 1.98 rolls on average, so an 'average' $100 box contains 25.5 finds.

1930's find rate is 1 coin every 54.3 rolls
1940's find rate (excluding War Silver) is 1 find every 5.1 rolls
1950's find rate is 1 find every 3.6 rolls

Special Coins:

So far, I have come across 45 'special' in my 100,000 coins searched.

Overall 'special' find rate is 1 coin every 55.6 rolls
Liberty V find rate is 1 coin every 2500 rolls (found 1)
Buffalo find rate is 1 coin every 278 rolls (found 9)
War Silver find rate is 1 coin every 109 rolls (found 23)
"Key" Jefferson find rate is 1 coin every 208 rolls (found 12)

Circulation Obsolescence:

Simply put ..... what percentage of these coins have been 'lost' from circulation?

Overall circulation obsolescence for the 1959 and earlier Jefferson series is 81.3%

Loss for the 1930's is 84.9%
Loss for the pre-war 40's is 81.4%
Loss for the War Silver is a staggering 98.6%
Loss for the post-war 40's is 77.5%
Loss for the early 50's is 71.7%
Loss for the late 50's is 69.7%

Status of My Quest:

I cracked my first roll on 2/25/08 ..... so it has taken me approximately 19 months to get to here ...... OK .... I'm not as fast as CND. It took me over a year to pass through 30,000 coins ..... and I've picked up the pace since I found this forum.

The goal has always been to complete the circulation strike collection of Jefferson nickels from rolls ..... thereby ending up with a collection worth ...... uhhhmm .... maybe $30.

Anyways .... after 2500 rolls I need five (5) coins to complete the quest .... 38P, 38S, 42S, 43D and 44D.

Whoever would have thought that I would bag both the 39D and 50D before I came across my first good-for-nothing lousy 1938-P?

That's it .... enjoy

David

Hey David,

You are well on your way to that set! It took me 8100 rolls to complete mine; you are only at 2500 and you already have both the biggest keys. You will get there very soon I predict!

I would hope you have found more than that! Probably a typo!

That's excellent analysis! I cannot believe the 38P hasn't shown up yet. Years ago when I did nickels, that used to be pretty easy to find, not as easy as 39P but still pretty easy.

Nice finds AND record keeping. I unfortunately had to buy my 50-D. Got tired of looking for it (don't have your perserverance). I did have an unusual roll once. I found a 1938, 1943 S and 6 Buffalo nickels in the same roll. I think someone robbed daddy's coin collection for spending money.
