I have seen many slabbed coins, most companies are in there own world with their #'s and sku codes. I have noticed that on PCGS above their sku's their would be something like 7863/23984753. The coin was graded a MS63, does this second set of numbers reflect that the coin basically just made the grade of 63, because I have also seen numbers like 7863/98243758, and the coin, to me looked much better than the 1st one I spoke of. Does this mean that their #'s reflect the level of the grade, meaning there must be a "run-down or check list" for the grading process, my question is are these #'s a reflection of how much of the grade given really is? Thanks for your help in advance, Mike.... I am trying to post a picture to assist in my question. Edited by Morgans Dad 10/03/2009 8:16 pm

I will use a actual PCGS coin from my collecion for example
It's Certification Number is 7951.58/21715359
I believe the 7951 (first set) may be their code for series and number in the series. The two digits after the period, in this case 58 is the grade the coin received (on this coin AU-58) The number sequence after the back slash is the actual certification number (if you go to their website, go to certification look-up, type in the sequence after the backslash and it will produce info on the coin to authenticate it as PCGS graded). Feel free to try out the code look up on their website using this number. If will come up as my AU-58 1927 Quarter Eagle.
Hope this helps...

cownas22,
I thank-you for the assistance. It worked like a charm, I might add the coin you have has an extremely low mintage and not a bad grade, I feel those things in combination, the coin should be worth much more, just my opinion... 388,000 is not a large mintage at all, again Thanks, Mike....

I seem to be being slow today. I found the listing explaining the first 4 digits relative to coin type on their site: http://www.pcgs.com/pcgsnolookup/ But I can't find the lookup portion for the last digits (the individual coin id). Do you have to register?

Nope, no need to register, just scroll down the main page, there is a button on the left side labeled "Certification Verification". The link is below. Just enter the numbers after the backslash on the slab. http://www.pcgs.com/cert/Hope this helps.

Thanks for the advice. I verified my PCGS graded coins. What a great service. I will use this in the future before I buy coins. PCGS lists a price from their price guide. Any comments on how this price compares to market pricing?
Once again, thank!!

I would say their price guide is on the high side for some coins and on the low side for some. It just depends on the coin. It seems their guide doesn't take surviving rates/ low mintages into account for some series (i.e. they price a low surviving rate coin at common date prices in some instances)
Their guide varies just as all of the guides do, remember they are Guides nothing more, nothing less.
