I just found on ebay the last item I need for my set. Can't tell you the set, I'm too worried someone else is going to steal my item. I've been looking for this exact thing for at least 5 years. It ends in X days. Can't tell you, no hints. I REALLY do not want anyone to bid on this item. It has a catalog value of a little more than $5, but I bid well over $30. I hope no one bids me up that far, but I really hope I don't lose it. I really should put a $100 high bid on it just to make absolutely certain I get it. If you have REALLY been looking for something (worth about $5) but could not find it for 5 years and it was the absolute last item in a large set, what would you bid?

But with such a low pricetag why not just fly the flag here on the boards and I am sure someone would be willing to help.

Many of us have loads of spares and love helping other members.

I would recommend sniping instead of large proxy. Seems to avoid the nibble effect of the little fish on your max bid.

I am very curious about the coin however. No way you will share what it is? Even swear me into your secret squirrel confidence and at least let me check in case I have a spare of it.

Now I know how much I have to bid to snipe it at the last minute and hold it hostage.

I know somebody who put $900 on a item that was probably worth $300-400 at best (I am not sure why he put it that high though). He knew it may go high as that range as previous auction has suggested for that item in the same condition. Funny thing is that somebody else thought the highest bid was going to be around $300 or so. He probably sniped the item for $1000+ for a quick win, too bad for the person I know, since he lost the auction. The sniper got it for 3x what it is worth lol.

Oh, and I hope you win your item!

I agree if you really want this item, put in your true maximum price as a snipe in the last seconds of the auction. Bid for a win and hope for a bargain - that's the sniper's goal.

I am also intrigued that a $5 item is so difficult to find. Unless you are building a holed set or a P01 (poor) set where the items aren't worth much but it's hard to find ones where date/mm is readable.

Ah - I see you posted in the World Coins section - sometimes coins are not worth much but are thinly traded - there's a limited market.
Hope you win - post back with your win (hopefully) after the auction ends.

Notice that this posting is in the WORLD coins forum. My item is neither a US, Canadian, or Australian coin. I did actually try to get this item here on CCF and had no luck (nor did I expect to given the incredibly low mintage and obscurity). Does this deepen the mystery?

I gladly paid much higher than CV for a 1985 British Virgin Island proof set to compliment my fish-themed collection. I had only been looking for that for around 18 months.

I'm interested to see what you have been waiting so long for. It wouldn't have anything to do with your Seychelles collection would it?

Happy bidding!

I pay over catalogue price for nearly every Indian coin I buy. Simply because they are hard to find here, and when you factor in postage, they are sometimes double what they are valued at.

I hope you get your coin, can't wait to see what it is.

The auction finally ended last night. And............I won. I paid 7.11 pounds plus 2 pounds shipping for the $5-7 coin. Snowman was absolutely right, it was the very last coin for my predecimal set from Seychelles. I finally found the 1969 10c, nonproof coin. I know, I know, its no beauty to the majority of you, but to me....it is priceless. I wonder if there are any other people with this set completed?
