Hello!

I've been trying to find infos on this "token"... The photos are not great though...

I know it,s not really a "thaler" or a "dollar" and it may be a commemorative token of some kind but I've never been able to find informations about it...
(The Dollar Ancestor is written along the border)

Thank you for the help, have a nice day, love the forum!

Hello Rdwarrior!

I did look on Google and did not find anything about this "token", "jeton" or whatever it is called (English is not my first language, sorry!)...That,s why I came on this forum...

I found a photo of the original but what I have, has "The Dollar Ancestor" written on it...So it,s a replica or a commemorative etc...
I was given this by my grandmother about 30 years ago and trying to find what is is and why it was made since then...

Hope someone will find the answer! (and this forum is so interesting that I can,t go to bed! ;)

The joachimsthaler, the first precursor to the "dollar", was minted by the Kingdom of Bohemia in the early 1500's. The name derives from Joachimsthal, a small town in what is now the Czech Republic (now known as Jachymov) near the German border, where the silver used to make these coins was mined.

Your coin is, as you point out, a replica of some kind. Wherever it was made, the target market appears to be English-speakers, since the coin has English on it, but it doesn't seem to have been produced in an English-speaking country; Googling the exact phrase "Thaler of Jachymov" finds one sold on ebay back in January by a German coin seller and another one being asked about on a Czech coin forum (where the moderator dismisses it as "not even a replica").

The Prague Mint has in recent years made numerous replica coins featuring famous designs from Czech history; I suspect your coin is just such a replica. Or it could have been made privately by someone in Jachymov, for sale to tourists visiting the town.

I think, this replica was made in Czechoslovakia, for the Expo 67 in Montreal.
