Just picked this up today, A few die breaks around the edges and some die clashing, in between eagle wing and wreath, and also around lips and neck, I can't see any doubling of the date. What grade would you guys give her? and what VAM if any. Thanks

I think it might make a 64.

I believe you're looking at an MS63-ish VAM-3B: http://www.vamworld.com/1882-CC+VAM-3BHave a look, on the reference page, for the die break above the cap which differentiates 3B from its' similar brethren.

I also vote 63. Note the eagle's breast feathers. Lack of definition there will keep this one from going any higher ... CC's are normally hammered. With the evident clashing I'm guessing this was the latter stage of the die life.

Not sure on the VAM#, but I would grade this coin at MS-63 based on the amount of chatter on the cheek and neck. Strike looks a little weak espically on the feathers on the eagle breast, and upper hair line on Ms. Liberty.

I was thinking 64 too. None of the chatter on the obverse looks very deep, and the reverse is very clean. Nice coin.

I'm a little confused with all the VAM business. I went to VAMWORLD.com and saw dozens of different VAMs for each individual mint in each year. How do you begin to research what VAM your coin is? Are all Morgan dollars VAMs?

I would go with MS64 guessing the eagle breast feathers show better in person than in the picture.
Nice frostiness on this coin!

How do you begin to research what VAM your coin is? Are all Morgan dollars VAMs? KisNap ... Start with the date and mintmark. Every Morgan and Peace dollar is a VAM. A VAM is a catalog number of the Obverse and Reverse die marriage. Most are very common and a few are exceedingly rare. In the case of this coin you would go to the 1882-CC tab and click on it. Without a little experience, it's a hit-or-miss proposition from that point on. Look at the key feature listed for each VAM and attempt to make a match. Check out VAM 3B for the 1882_CC and look at this coin for the diagnostic features. WARNING-IF YOU DO THIS YOU MAY BE HOPELESSLY HOOKED. I IGNORED THE WARNINGS AND AM NOW ADDICTED!

SeatedNut, I totally agree with you, I only wanted 1 Morgan dollar, just for curiosity, then I started reading books on Morgans, joined this forum, joined VAM World, and 81 Morgan dollars later, I'm picking out every little detail on the coins, and trying to work out what VAM's they are, and how to grade them. By the way, thanks to all for the feedback on this coin. Regards
