I was thinking about just going to the bank and getting $300 dollars of change, sorting through it and then handing it back (they have a counting machine - so not much effort). Do banks charge for change - has anybody had experience of this?
I don't work in a shop or a place that handles money (electronic funds aside!) so I don't get to see many coins in the day.
Any suggestions welcome :-)

Right, OCD is on. Just got $50 of 50c from the local bank. Should keep me out of trouble for a bit.

Most banks don't charge any extra fees to give out or receive change, if you've got an account with them. The teller-assisted withdrawal transaction will probably incur a fee, however.
The credit union my coin club has an account with charges a "handling fee" if the amount of coin is over $100, deposit or withdrawal. I found that out the hard way when I deposited the proceeds of a successful raffle. Next time, I'll make deposits of $99 at a time!
As for general ideas to look at lots of coins, I know several people who visit the big-city casinos (which don't charge fees for exchanging large amounts of coins) and sort through the coins there before changing them back. The downside of this is the likelihood of "slot machine damage" on anything you find.

Good luck! I don't recommend taking them back to the same bank, otherwise next time you ask for coins, you may end up with the same ones again. Build a relationship with a teller or two at one bank, let them know you collect coins. Dump them at another bank with a coin machine and everyone will be happy.

Don't forget the king of 20c pieces, the 1966 wavy 2. How in-depth are you going? Are you interested in varieties such as IRB spaced, joined etc? The 1981 Canadian 3 1/2 claw and so on?

wavy 2 right up there at the top. I want to try and collect each variation of each coin in all decimal sets! I have Greg McDonalds reference book which is great.

what a rollercoaster. I go to the bank today, grab $60 of 20c. 5 rolls in I think I find a wavy 2. I am not sure if it is or not. Local coin shop is not sure, (If you are on here - I was in this afternoon and bought the newspaper coin!). I have found a couple of state coins and 6 aUNC so I can call this a success and will do it again. Good weight training carrying the coins around town if nothing else. Still got two rolls to open, maybe the wavy 2 is in one of those!

You're doing well dibby! Keep us informed of your finds. If you find a wavy before me, I'll be and won't know what to do, but at least I'll be for you!
