So, I plucked a proof John Adams dollar out of circulation ... I'd never seen a proof presidential, but I noticed that it has 3 ridges along the edge, each spaced 1/3rd the way around... anyone know if this is "normal?"

I wouldn't think so, but I did some reading and the lettering on proof is actually placed as a part of the strike and they do this with a 3 piece split collar. I am not sure if this is just the way it is because of that, or if this is an actual error where maybe the collar didn't come all the way together.

As a side note, I have (finally) obtained a good camera.. just got it today!

Yes, those lines are created by the segmented collar and it is perfectly normal. Nice circulation find though(as is any proof)

There are so many of those 2009 Presidential dollar Proof Set
'coins-in-lens-only' on ebay going for barely above face value
(that are from Clad Proof Sets that were broken up for the Cents)
that I was thinking about picking up a few sets, just so I could spend them!

After all, I am the guy who got two rolls of James K. Polk Dollars
from the Denver Mint on the first day of release, and then put two
of the coins in a parking meter right after I left the Mint...

The raised lines on the edge of the coin are where the edges of the segmented collar come together. The force of the strike forces the metal into the seam between the segments. If you have a chance to look at the old Saint-Gaudens eagle and double eagle you will see those same three raised lines on them as well because their edges were also made using a three piece segmented collar.
