I do a lot of garage sale buying and last Saturday I bought some coins, one was a silver eagle 1oz round. When I bought it I did notice it looked chome plated on the back but the front looked like silver and that is why I was buying. I have a pile of silver eagles and looked real close for obvious counterfit marks. It looked perfect and they only wanted $8 so I got it.

I got home and it weighed 31.6 grams (a half gram over) and tested it with my electronic gold/silver tester and it did not test silver. Also because of the plating I tried to file the edge and it did not "feel" like silver as I ran my file over it.

But, every detail looked genuine even down to the reeded edge. I have spotted counterfit Morgans at swap meets just by feel. The reeded edge felt ragged.

Any one have simular experiences with silver eagles?

The only practical metal that could approximate the density of silver would be lead(11.342g/cm3 vs 10.501g/cm3 for Ag) and it should be fairly easy to figure out if it is made of lead. Silver rings, lead thuds

The 8 dollars would have been my first clue.

Definately not lead I know what lead feelS like with a file also. Recently I bought a fairly heavy silver bracelet with cabachon stones in every link. Under every stone was a blob of lead. I will try the thud test tonight.

The file "feel" on the eagle felt pretty hard, silver is soft, lead is like butter.

It was at yard sale is why I only paid $8. Sellers have no idea what they have or what they are worth. I have also seen the same thing for $25, in that case I let me feet say no thanks.

Palladium would have similar properties to what you describe, but it seems unlikely that someone would make a fake out of metal that is 10x more expensive.

That is why I said "practical metal" Palladium is not practical at $300/oz. No one is going to be making counterfeit coins out of bismuth or molybdenum either. Everything else with a density close to silver is either highly toxic or radioactive
