I recently inherited a small coin collection form my Grandmother, while looking through the coins I found what appears to be an undersized penny. Can anyone shed some light on how this happens and what the value could be.

Thanks,
Brian

It's what is referred to as a "dryer" coin. It spent a lot of time in a clothes dryer. Also, to CCF.

As others have said, it is just damage. Ever been to a commercial laundromat and heard a coin rattling around in the fins of a dryer? That coin is the end result of that repeated tumbling against the steel drum of a dryer.

Hi,

Here's another one that came directly out of one of the fins in a commercial clothes dryer. It is indeed what caused the damage to your cent.

Thanks,
Bill

Pretty sure we're working on making one of these in our dryer at home right now!

Welcome! I've seen these before but was wondering if anyone has seen one of these on ebay being sold as an error of some type? I did a brief search for one but came up empty. You never know, there may be a premium out there for these "rare" beauties.

The types found like this are from comerical dryers and are not just clanging around, but stuck into a fin and tubbled a very long time till the dryer was serviced. Found in rolls know someone that gave some of these from that source. Just damaged.
