I was wondering if anyone had found one of the 2009 Jefferson D mint nickels? I have looked through a couple hundred rolls and not a one. I have the Satin from my mint set but not one meant for circulation

I believe they stopped minting dimes and nickels in april. Very few were released. There were only about 33,000,000 made of each.

I have read in numerous online and written publications about why it is difficult to find 2009 dated nickels and dimes in circulation. They all state, because of the weak economy, people are not hording coins, instead they being spend and are placed back into circulation. People are cashing in their change and the banks have no need to order as much change from the Federal Reserve as they used to. Therefore resulting in very little change being needed from the US Mint. Unfortunately for us collectors, it makes it difficult to obtain 2009 dated coins.

The same thing happened from 1930-1933 during the worst of the Depression. Some denominations weren't even struck at all during some of those years. In 1932, only pennies and quarters were minted, and in 1933, it was only pennies and halves. Some 1937 and 1938 mintages were also lower as a result of the economy slowing again in 1937. (i.e. 1938-D half)

I could be wrong but I don't think the Denver mint has released their nickels at all yet. I had my mother-in-law ask around at several banks in Denver and they said they weren't getting any at the moment. That was a month ago though.

The only 2009 nickels I've seen are the Philadelphia mint. I wish the Denver mint will appear soon. Haven't seen any 2009 dimes at all.

The Denver Mint itself released the 2009-D Nickels, but they all went to the Federal Reserve, which is still holding them.... I personally saw 2009-D Nickels rolling out of the Schuler high-speed press last June. Some 2009-D business strike Nickels were made in June and July. The 2009-D Satin Finish Nickels are made in the (dedicated) Uncirculated coin production area, north of the main high-speed production floor. The Nickels went to the Federal Reserve Branch in Denver (ten blocks from the Mint), but they could be in Kansas City by now.
