No; it is actually pretty easy to find. Through 11,900 rolls of nickels that I have searched through, I have found 282 of them, making it the sixth easiest pre 1958 date to find (behind 1958d,1957d,1941,1940, and 1946)

I concur with coppernickeldaddy. In my hoard of pre-1960 nickels,
1954-D is my 6th largest stash, behind 40, 41, 57-D, 58-D, & 59-D.
The key dates in the series are 39-D & 50-D.
The semi-key dates are 38-D, 38-S. 39-S, 42-D, silver War Nickels, 49-S, 50, 51-S, & 55.
