Well I went to my first coin show today. I really did not have much time or money today so I was only there for a little over an hour, but notwithstanding those two factors I must admit I found it a little overwhelming. My initial impression is that Morgans must be the most popular coin to collect. It seemed every dealer (I think this was a relatively small show) had bunches and bunches of Morgans.
Since I am new to the hobby I plan to go slow and organize the coins my father has given me and start with what seems to be relatively small and inexpensive set of Sacagaweas. I really waded into the deep end by purchasing 3 uncirculated Sacs for a grand total of $8.50. The dealer was nice and also threw in a pair of gloves which I did not have.
I have a couple of questions for the board:
the coins I bought were in a cardboard square with clear plastic over the coin. the price and description were written on the cardboard. the one shop I have been to had many displayed this way too so I am assuming it is common. Is this a safe way to store coins for the long term? Some of the ones my father gave me have been in such packages for upwards of 20 years or more. I have seen some posts on here discussing PVC? damage. Is this type packaging going to lead to such damage. Thanks for any help.

Today's 2x2's with mylar inserts are okay for your coins provided they are stored at room temperature and LOW humidity. They are not air tight and in my opinion, offer better protection than coins stuck in a Whitman folder. If you do use 2x2's, I always squeeze the staples with pliers so that the staple can't scratch other coins in a box. They also have staplers that will fold over designed specifically for 2x2's. For long term storage of coins that easily tarnish and/or oxidize (like red Lincolns), I like to use Intercept Shields. Check them out here: http://www.interceptshield.com/Again, keep your coins high and dry and they will outlast your life...for the next collector. After all, it is the goal of all of us to keep our coins in the very condition we acquired them in...right?

I have used 2X2 mylars for years and have NEVER had a coin tone in them. I can't say the same for albums and I have tried just about all of them. If I have a coin I am really concerned about I ALWAYS use an airtite holder to protect it!

You'll have a blast Bryan, I just got back from my second show a while ago. I'm reading while I get dinner around and then I'm gonna get my new coins settled in.
Giddy as a schoolgirl, well, as giddy as a 43 year old can get anyway.
I think one of the big attractions, for me anyway, is being able to talk to other people who get into the hobby. Most people I know couldn't care less but at a show you can strike up a conversation with just about anyone and they get it.
Now, if I could just get away without spending so much............

Big Orange, You sounds like me, my first coin show was very overwhelming. So much to see, so little money and no nearly enough knowledge to know what the good deals were. Bryan, Have a great time at yours, just make sure you don;t go crazy and buy everything you thought you ever wanted, , I was good, only bought some ASE's I needed to fill my Danco album, but I wanted so badly to buy everything. TSOTL, welcome. You'll find lots of folks here who "get it" and have lots to share. Coin collecting can be a lonely hobby if not for the internet! Margaret

We have a pretty decent coin show once a month where I live. The only problem is I always seem to end up spending money

Hello Metalman and Margaret, thanks for the welcome. I coulda sworn I did the intro thing here already but I guess not. I've been lurking around for a week or more reading up so I suppose I forgot about that, I forget a lot of things anymore, stinkin old age. Anyhoo, I'm new to the hobby, my dad left me some coins several years ago and my kids noticed them one day last fall so I dug them out and we went over them, next thing I know I'm sucked in. My dads stash was mostly some wheaties, some Indian Head cents, buffalos & Liberty nickels, some S.B.A.s and a few Ikes as well as the usual odd assortment. I've added A.S.E.s and Sacagaweas but I'm pretty much just building on what Dad left me while I try to figure out what the heck I'm doing. On the personal side I'm a 43 year old divorced factory rat from north-eastern Indiana. I get into fishing and a bit of hiking, movies, reading and rooting for the university of Illinois football and basketball teams (born and raised in Illinois). I used to follow the cubs and bears a lot but I have trouble with the pros anymore, they just seem like spoiled kids so all that kinda died. Well, thats about it. I doubt you hear much out of me unless its some kind of newbie question, mostly I just hang around and try to learn what I can.

Glad to here you had fun. that is the reason for going right. And yes Morgan are very popular. it is said that almost all collecter have atleast one in there collection. When ever I go to a coin show I Have to walk around it 2 or 3 times. the first is to get a feel for who is there. the second is to find the coin on my want list. A list makes it easyer for me to stay focused and not spend to much. then the third I make my final buys. And I have never had adn problems with the 2x2 I belave most of the new ones you can buy will not have pvc in it. the 2x2 are ussally fairly cheap eihter form a dealer or on ebay as long as you don't get one of these guys who are trying to make a big profit off of shipping. also there are some good coin supply dealer online as well

Just a note: (to Australians) The term "rooting" in the USA means Cheering and supporting (a team). For those in the USA, you don't want to know what it means in Australia as this is a family forum.
