This is one crazy error, as seen on Heritage. I'm not sure I'd even spot this one amongst other coins.

The struck fragment:

As slabbed:

I dont see how you evan put a numerical grade on it. What the contact marks on the top 2 millimeters kept this out of a ms63?
Rest in Peace

Saw that on another forum. It was mentioned that the PCGS diagnosis is wrong. "It's a "coin shrapnel". It represents the outer margin of a multi-struck coin (probably part of a pile-up), that broke off".

I think the mislabeled slab makes the situation look much more ridiculous than what it is.
TPG's opened the flood gates when they agreed to add error and variety listing headers. They are at the mercy of the market for what they receive. This item just makes them look like clowns. I understand they have to treat each piece professionally. To provide equal respect to the submission regardless of individual tastes, but come on now. You folks have a reputation to uphold for at least some degree of scrutiny...

Rockdude, yep--I saw that post of this Heritage auction.
I agree--it's a little humorous to see this fragment slabbed.

I can't help but wonder what it would go for on ebay. I can see it now - "One of a kind mint error. Grade by one of the best TPG's around. A can't miss for any error collector!" No Reserve!!
Rest in Peace

RFB is right, but of course it's about the Benjamins for the TPGs. They will slab anything for a price. Modern bullion pieces @ MS 69 & 70 is an example. Anyway, TPGs started out as a good idea, but as in many things greed got in the way. Too bad there are so many suckers that got caught up in it.

This has got to be the epitome of hypocrisy by PCGS.

Here they slab and label a piece of metal and yet they will not acknowledge one single 2009 LP1,2 or 3 as valid DDO'S or DDR'S.

What's up with that?

I would expect this kind of slab and grade from a little known grading company, not PCGS. I find it harder to believe that this even qualifies as a mint error.

They gave it a grade because the reverse has letters on it.
