Hi everyone! I just started collecting about a month ago after my grandfather showed me his collection. I thought it was all pretty cool. I've been collecting State Quarters for a month now and decided I wanted to spend the money on a really good set. I've been watching tons of ebay auctions figuring out what everything is selling for and I ended up bidding on and winning a complete 1999 to 2008 State Quarter set of P. D, S proof and S silver uncirculated and pulled from mint sets for $380 delivered. I will add a few pictures below. My grandfather told me to go for it but with this being my 1st major purchase I'm worried if it was a mistake. I still have a lot to learn. Could you all give me your opinions? also any advice what to look for once it does get delivered? If I did make a bad purchase dont be afraid to tell me Thanks for your help. Jason

to CCF! IMO we all paid to much for some of our coins. But, the bottom line is; if you are happy and satisfied with your set that's what counts. I'm not sure what a fair price would be. The real experts will be able to help with that. I put together a beautiful State Quarter set (P&D) mostly out of bank rolls and trades here on the forum.

$380 is pretty good in my opinion. I have over $400 stuck into mine and I still need a few silvers. I also have all the satin's. I bought full silver proof sets so I'm guessing that's why mine is a bit higher. The 1999 silver are worth $150 - $200 themselves.

I too watched these auctions for a few months, in case I ended up needing to sell mine, in my opinion I think you got a good deal. The price below what most of the ones I saw were going for.

It appears that you did get a good deal on it, provided that the silver proofs are actually silver- that is where most of the value lies. You should carefully remove all of the silver proofs and weigh them on an accurate scale- silver quarters will weigh 6.25g while clad quarters will weigh 5.67g.

Welcome to the Hobby and to the Forum! It looks like you made a good deal if, as other have said, the Silver Quarters are indeed the silver issues. In the least the set saved you lots of time and effort in retrieving the coins individually.

Welcome aboard!
I think you did okay; I think that each silver quarter is probably worth a couple of bucks at current silver prices. Consider the time and hassle you would have had putting the set together yourself, and you can see that you saved a pile of money, time, and headaches.
What other kind of stuff are you going to want to collect?

Thanks for all the quick replies and great advice so far. I just bought a digital gram scale and will be sure to check the weight. I also read another way to make sure the silver coins are real is to make sure there is no copper band? Are these the only 2 methods to tell if the silver quarters are authentic? I really appreciate all of your opinions. You all made me feel so much better about this. I was into collecting autographs for about 10 years and you have to be so careful about forgeries. It keeps you on your toes and makes you leery of buying from dealers or off of ebay. I came into coin collecting with that same mentality and its a big reason why I have questions. Is that a big problem with this hobby or is it rare to come across counterfeits? To WpgLwr (im not sure how to reply directly to posts yet) I'm going to the bank tomorrow to start my Presidential dollar collection. I plan on collecting the proofs every year for all the national parks when it starts and as soon as I learn more and know what to look for, I want to get into the older pre-1965 silver coins :)

I think you did pretty good considering you got the 1999 Silver proofs because those alone can be pretty expensive not counting all the other coins in the albums

Its really easy to tell the difference between clad and silver proofs. Just look at the edge of the coin and if its a full solid silver color, its silver. If it seems to be half and half colored, its clad. Once you see the 2 different coins, you'll be surprised how different they are.

I think you did pretty good, as long as all the coins are in good condition once you receive them. Coin shops in my area sell complete sets like the one you bought in the $500 range. Once you see all the coins you will see the the silver proofs have a different look to them (color). Be very careful if you take them out of the folder, finger prints and oil from your fingers can show up later if handled incorrectly. I use clean white cotton gloves when putting coins in the folder. For my State Quarter set I did not put them in the folder until I had them all .. yes some I had 10 years before I put them in the Dansco. According to the PCGS grading book a common way coins get damage is from the plastic slides sliding back and forth over the high points of a coin. So watch out there too. Some of the states have a higher book value if in higher grade .. I think GA and TN are best .. but would have to check the price guide.

First, and most importantly, ! I think you did well, considering the set contains all the clad and silver proofs! I've got a set I pulled from pocket change, and am considering putting another together like yours. Nice job, what's next?

WELCOME TO THE FORUM Although I'm not a big fan of those Quarters, from what I see there you are off to a great start. I'm glad you are using an Album. So many people start out with those folders where you use you thumb or a hammer to get the coins into the slots. You are really off to a good start.
