isn't that what Americans call " Struck Through Grease" ? coins are minted so that they can work for us. some people celebrate a coin's beauty by converting it to jewellery or ornament: we collectors don't understand that; and they probably find us incomprehensible. Peter in Oz

Yeah...It is authentic. Looking at it under a loope, I can see threading in the hole. With the threading and the little signs of wear, I think it was probably drilled around the time it was minted. Too bad...probably a $400-$450 coin without the hole...lol. I did get a deal on it. I don't think it would be worth it to pay $200 or so to have it properly restored though. Just a beautiful coin with probably an interesting story behind it...? Someone Graphic arts designer could do some good photoshop work on it and sell it on ebay... lol...sorry ebay...just amusing myself.

I saw this post at work and couldn't link to the photobucket pics until now. Wasn't sure what the fuss was about but now it's clear, really clear. That is one heck of a coin. I've never seen one that good outside a slab. I'd pick it up just to use for comparison.

Does look like doubled shield on the left side. Such a pity.

"That little hole....Just big enough for a wallet to fit in."...indeed. They are such nice pieces! Wow guys. I didn't even notice to double shield, musta been distracted by the hole. Thanks for pointing that out...brings a question to mind...anybody ever start or put together a high end damaged collection just for personal amusement? I'm sure there are really nice pieces out there that have been damaged at some point. Just as like a conversational collection, I guess...anyone?

Yes I have a Frankenstein type set I started a few years back. I am working on 3 different type sets at once. One in the highest grades I can find, my precious set. One in circulated, started it as I realised so many upgraded coins were still in my collection that would fit. It was a shame to not have just a simple set...plus it makes the precious set look majestic by contrast.
Then this newer third set is the Frankenstein set. All holed and bent or otherwise screwball coins but with very high detail. I do not actively search for holed coins but sometimes you wander across them for less than 5% of market value without the hole. You just cant pass them up when at such a bargain....at least I can't.
