Ok, this is a coin that was converted into a button OR a button that was shaped in the design of a coin. Which do you think?

What coin is it? I can't place it...

Given the shape of the snake in the mouth of the bird...I suspect it's a copy...speak up experts!!

That is indeed a copy. It may have been intended as merely a button that looked like a one reale coin. OR it is quite possible that it was a contemporary counterfeit that was detected, removed from circulation, and made into a button. Who knows, maybe someone got it in circulation, realized that it was fake, and decided to not have it be a total loss and decided to make it into a button.

harrison2 - That is actually a military button made specifically for that purpose. Many were made in France and they come in hundreds of styles. They are not counterfeits although there is anecdotal evidence that some were actually circulated as a type of fraud.

These were very popular into the 1880s at least. Many of the French versions date to the Maxmilian period.

swamperbob pulls though again!

Since you seem to have read up on the subject...how can I detect a fake cob?

I found a dealer that had a couple, but I just couldn't help but think that they were faked....something about them didn't ring true.

harrison2 Sorry, but cobs are not my thing. I own a couple dozen that I have had since the 1960s or 70s but I never really liked them - too easy to fake.

I defer to experts in the series and only comment on blatant forgeries or examples I have seen in person.
