It's from Spain - KM #663, 10 centimos (Mexico uses centavos).

www.numismaster.com is an online database compiled by the people that print the haed copy catalogues, but you have to pay a subscription to access prices. https://www.(131231) Not Allowed - Auto-Removed is a privately compiled listing of 19th and 20th century coins; it lists prices for types but often doesn't mention if there are any scarce dates or varieties.

Sap, Thanks for the links... https://www.numismaster.com is out of my budget

But...www.(131231) Not Allowed - Auto-Removed IS!....however, I have a 1811/1810 2 Real coin that I have had a hard time finding info on other than an private auction house that had one listed...this coin does not seem to be listed in (131231) Not Allowed - Auto-Removed

Am I missing something?

Sorry, I somehow missed seeing your question there back when you posted it.

WCG is basically a private collection database, with a few pics contributed by others. For 20th century, it's pretty comprehensive for circulation coins, but for 19th century, especially "irregular" issues like the Mexican war of independence, coin listings on WCG are either very patchy or non-existent.

If you want a comprehensive listing, you'll have to bite the bullet and either buy a hardcopy or DVD catalogue, or subscribe to NumisMaster.

Harrison2, please post a picture of your 2 reales. I have never seen a true overdate on that coin and would love to see what you have. Is your coin the "Moneda Provisional" with the "cross on mountain" reverse?

It was made in 1810 and 1811 and the 1810 is really rare, the 1811 is pretty common. How clear is the overdate and are you sure it is an overdate? I don't remember this coin as havingan overdate variety. I'm not home where my library is but the Krause catalog should have it listed in the Mexico "war of independence" section.

Your coin has no date, probably from a combination of wear and the usual very poor strike on these coins. So we will never know if yours is an 1810 or an 1811 but still a nice "war of independence" coin.. An overdate is when the die from one year is recut to show another year (why waste a perfectly good die?) but when the coins are struck, you can still see the underlying date. When you stated you had an 1810/1811 2 reales, I thought you meant an overdate (1811 over 1810), you were merely listing the fact that it is a 2 year only type, my mistake. If you are interested I can post photos of some really clear overdates on some Spanish Colonial coins so you can see what I mean.

Thanks for the explanation...after asking the question, I did some digging and was able eventually figure out why the confusion ;)

In the search for information, I have seen some overdates, so save your photo posting energies!

I would, however, be interested in some advice. This coin doesn't fit very well in my collection...what is the best way to market this coin? ebay? Really, I'd like to trade...but that might be a little difficult.

Excellent, I can give that a try. Do you have access to the book value on a specimen in this condition?
