I went again to our general store to ask the clerk if he had half dollars that he was willing to cash out at face. He is usually pretty excited to trade them for paper since they don't quite fit in the register. Anyways, he had $24 face in halves. I ended up with 4 silver Kennedys in the lot. 3(40%) and 1(90%)! Made my day! I don't know if I should purchase this in the "roll searching" section as it is basically the same effect. In total, I have purchased 7 rolls for face at our general store and came out with 7 (40%) and 2(90%) silver halves. Is that a decent ratio for half dollar searching? I do like this way of coin collecting because you can never lose money... I think he has more halves in the back, so I will investigate

Nice finds, have you ever bought rolls from banks? In all my years collecting I have never searched rolls. This winter I might start seems like a fun thing to while away the time.

Roll searching halves from banks can be a blast! or bust! This year I've found 441(40%), 41(90%), 12 Franklins and 1 Walker for a total of 84.75 ounces of silver at $2.92 ounce (factoring in the face value). There is still alot of silver floating around but you also have to deal with all the clad other searchers are dumping at the banks!

There is a great increase in old coins in rolls or bags from banks. This is due to several reasons. One is the massive amount of robberies from homes with coin collections and they are just dumped in banks. Also, and increase in robberies after a coin show, coin store robberies too. Then too with the poor economy many people are dumping jars, cans, boxes, etc of coins they have been accumulating for a rainy day. There are those that collected coins as a kid and do not know what they have and just dump all in a bank.

That is a good ratio, and generally higher than roll searching.

I am going to start searching rolls of halves, as soon as I find a bank that I can dump at ( with a machine ). From what I have been reading here halves have the best ration of silver to clad. Its a great way to invest in silver and all it takes is a little time, and I'm sure I would enjoy the searching. Any tips would be appreciated, I'm assuming there is some refining that could be done to the process, refining I would rather not discover on my own if the info is out there. Thanks

Yes I guess that's right, people are cashing in their coins due to the economy also. I gotta get to the bank soon. Do the banks then give any problems to you returning the rolls. I know the banks here are over board, no account they don't want to see you. Maybe a larger branch is better I guess.

Yes, generally, no matter what the size of bank, they would prefer you to have an account with them before you "purchase" a box or ESPICIALLY before you are allowed to "dump" a box there. A lot of banks are charging fees to "order" OR "dump" even though you DO have an account there ! This is because it costs them money to "order" and "handle" the coins you purchase or dump off. I have a personal checking....a personal savings......and a company business account with mine.....so far no charges. I use one branch to "order" and one of the other four branches to dump. And it is not a huge nationwide mainstream bank, but they are moderately successful in our Capitol city of Kansas.
