Full ounce, too much is lost to premiums on the smaller coins. Exceptions would be well established world gold with a fractional gold content such as roosters, sovereigns, pesos, ducats, etc. It takes a little more commitment to buy a full ounce these days than it did at $300/oz though.

Like the 1/10 oz
Easy to purchase
Can buy one or two a month with out draining the entire account
Easier to trade or sell for fast cash
like to collect them from different countries - Australia, Austria, Canada, China, South Africa, United States

There are other countries that produce gold coins, but these are the most widely available

I don't own much gold, and when I buy gold I prefer to buy coins that actually circulated. If I had the spare cash to invest, I'd buy 1 ounce coins, or bigger - you get more gold for your dollar that way. If the world economic system really does collapse and plunge us back into the Dark Ages like the doom-mongers keep saying will happen, then niceties of the "premiums over spot for gold in coin form" convention will be one of the first things to go.

If I'm after pure gold then absolutely the 1 ounce coins. In fact all the pure gold coins I own are 1 ounce. I don't understand why people would pay the premium for the smaller sizes when you're not likely to get back any of the premiums when you eventually sell. Sure it's more money to buy a one ounce coin but just be patient while you save up more money and pray the gold prices doesn't jump up while you're saving up! :)

Given the premiums on the smaller size coins I would say you're much better off buying the old European gold coins. At least with a sovereign, 20 Franc, etc. you're still getting a easily recognized amount of gold plus you get the history of the coin actually being used as legal tender back in the day.

I collect the $100.00 issues, I never buy at issue I wait and buy at bullion. The mintage is low at 5000 for the past few years and if gold fever strikes I think any gold close to bullion is a great buy.
What follows recession ? Inflation, and that's what drives up the value of all commodities and gold is a fairly finite commodity.

I like classic (pre-1933) U.S. $10 Eagles. They have almost 0.500 troy ounces of pure gold and are a very nice size.
