I ranted about the mint quality control,
now on a related note...

I have collected mint and proof sets for years.
Looking forward to one day using the 'virgin'
coins in an album or some such method of storage
and/or display. Well, I recently got the bug
and started buying Danscos for my modern coins.

I am really disappointed though in what Dansco
chooses to put in their collections and what
they choose to leave out. Also in Dansco's choice
of binders...

So I have been buying the modern coin Danscos and
swapping in my mint/proof set coins to fill them up.
I think I made it abundantly clear that I am mad
about how bad the quality is of the mint supplied
coins now that they are out and truly visible.

However, I am very pleased with the quality
of the coin albums. As far as that goes, Dansco tops
any folder, album, or other coin storage that I have
used so far. At least any that offers ease of storage,
portability, and display all at the same time.

My rant is about the holes in the books.

Why, for example does the Kennedy set have separate
holes for SMS coins, as well as the same year coins?
Fine... I have SMS sets, so those holes got filled.
But then you go to any other album for those years,
AND THERE ARE NO SMS HOLES FOR THOSE COINS!
The SMS sets had more than just specially processed
halves in them. The other coins are just as good looking,
yet the other albums don't have places for them.

That's just one example.
Others that just irk me are the albums with holes
for errors. I am not an error collector and don't
see a need for empty holes in my album. Yet the same
album is missing holes for 'legit' coins that should
have holes. So I end up having to decide on getting
a blank page full of holes, to add to these albums,
just to put just a couple of legit coins. Now I have
holes for errors that will never get filled, I have
holes in the blank page that are empty forever, and
I don't have coins labeled that should be. I know,
it is petty to whine about, but hey...

Another thing is that they have albums from 5/8" to
1 1/4" thick. Why do they put some collections in
the fattest albums to squeeze them all together, but
then divide another collection up into multiple thin
albums? If you can fit all the Lincolns into a fat
album, why do I need to buy 3 albums for my 1998-2009
quarters? If Dansco planned ahead, they would know
that a PDSS set 1998-2009 would fit in the same binder
as the 8100 Lincolns. Seems like they just want to
cash in on the State Quarters and have folks buy 3
$24 albums, rather than one $30 album.

I could go on and on with inconsistencies etc...
but I won't make you all suffer. ;)

Yet another reason I've given up on albums all togetherr and am putting my coins in 2x2's and 20 pocket sheets. It's easier to move them around when the collection changes, I have no annoying holes to fill that I really didn't want to fill anyway (i.e. errors) and when my time comes, it will be easier for my daughter, should she decide so, to sell them.

Just another thought...

I agree on the inconsistency in the holes that they have. I agree that it is not cool to have my collection "determined" by the album, but I go with it anyway. Something has to make the decision. I have a Dansco Panama album that stops at 1963 (or is it 1962?). I try to fill the album, but still get the rest and put them in 2 X 2's. It is an arbitrary world!

It IS wacky...

Sometimes I ask myself, "What are those Dansco guys thinking?"

Like I said, it's petty... I am just venting.

My 8100 cheezes me off because it has a hole for
a worn die 1922-D "plain" cent, error... But then
it doesn't acknowledge the fact that there are both
copper and zinc 2009 cents. Yet we all know it has
holes for 1982 coppers and zincs separately.

I have been buying Airtites and hard plastic 2 pocket safe flips. I make up my own sets and can put them in pocket pages or in 2x2 boxes back to back in order. They are safe from further damage and they do look pretty attractive in my opinion.
Dansco-Album-Rant...Can-You-Tell-I-Am-In-An-Ill-Mood-Today
If you really want to use Dansco albums the just unscrew the screws flip the pages backwards and upside down and write in what you want below each coin. For example, 1938 ( Jefferson nickel ) On the backside you can use cutouts from envelopes or small labeling stickers, lick em and stick em and put the short version of the date and the grade on it.
For example, 38 MS65 next might be 38D MS64

That's an interesting comment about the SMS coins. Hadn't realized that before.

There is no doubt that Dansco album design decisions impact the "demand" side of coin prices. If Dansco specifies a certain error or overdate, Dansco users seek it and drive its price up. But, to be fair, the Dansco people are in a tough situation. They are probably wondering what the people at the Mint are thinking :-)

If you are an avid user of Dansco albums (as I am), consider supplementing their pre-designed albums with extra Dansco pages that hold 2x2 flips.

Also, consider using their custom printed binder service in conjunction with the pages that hold 2x2 flips to make your own album designs. As a token collector, I have 100+ custom printed Dansco albums. They look great on the shelves right next to the standard Dansco-designed ones.

How do you get custom printed Dansco albums? I've never been able to find a Dansco website and all I've ever seen is the little "catalog" that comes with each Dansco album.

Do you think they would agree to making me a 1 1/4"
binder using the lettering and inside printing labels
from a 7181? Seems like it would be an easy thing to do.
?

They just put the stick on inside printed labels from
the one album onto the thicker album... I need to ask
about that. I don't want to use 2 or 3 albums for one
set just because they split them up into several thin
albums.

A 1 1/4" binder with 7181 spine and cover lettering is a Yes. Also, you can fill that 1 1/4 binder with any pages from any album that Dansco makes. But, will Dansco apply the inside cover sheets of a 7181 to a custom binder? It is not listed as an available custom service but it won't hurt to ask. Call them at 323-734-6373. Or Email them at DanscoCorp@aol.com

Been there, done that! An excellent suggestion!

As far as I know, Dansco will make any size binder say anything you want. I had no problems ordering replacement binders for some of my albums (some had gotten bigger since I bought them and I wanted the original size).

If you have any questions, I suggest you call them first and they will tell you exactly what you need to include in the mailing.

I totally agree with this! It's gotten to the point where I don't even want to buy an album, or any new pages until the page is full, so when the mint plays their games, I wouldn't have to buy new pages.

I've had a Dansco sitting on my shelf for about 6 months relatively untouched, home to a Morgan and Peace dollar.... Overall, I like the folder design, the layout and size. I also got the sleeve cover which make storage easier.

The only thing I found frustrating was getting the items (the dollars) in the holes without separating the front side of the page from the back side. Moving coins around in the page reminds me of Plinko on the Price is Right. I don't know how I'm going get rows of small coins to align properly, and without scratching coins against each other as I move them along.

I am confused here. I have never had a problem getting coins into the pages. Slide the front plastic cover out, insert coins, slide it back in.
