I know the pics aren't that great but they are the best I can do with my equipment. They look like lines left from die polishing but they are not continuous and they are so large. Any ideas? I want to put this in my education collection.

If those are scratches into the coin's surface, then there are numerous possibilities. Post mint damage of this type is very common.

I know the pics are horrible but they are not post mint. The lines go under the memorial so they were on the die .

Much better image hockingzig! What year is the coin? Can you feel the "scratches" or are they in the metal?

You should post this over on the Modern U.S. Variety & Error Coins forum. It could be a planchet flaw. Could be poorly mixed alloy if pre-1982.

Chances are this is Feeder Finger Damage on the die. Very common and generally run in a north west to south east direction.
