Good question about the mintmark. So I looked at a dozen random 14-Ds on Heritage, and didn't see a mintmark position that high--are any legit coins like that? And what is that seam where the fields meet the rim?

I had not noticed that issue with the field at the rims. It doesn't look right. I won't be bidding on it.

I just looked at the coins, DVCollector had posted, and I thought No 1 coin had about the same mintmark height as the coin nolawyer had been looking at. And, coin No2 doesn't look VF to me, also may have been cleaned. IMHO.

I'd avoid key dates like the 1914-D Lincoln without authentication. This coin has numerous counterfeits floating around out here and ebay is NOT the place to buy raw, key date coins. G & VG slabbed '14-Ds are available for a reasonable price and if you stick with PCGS, NGC, ANACS or ICG you can be sure you're getting the real thing.

Why spend your hard earned money without being 100% your coin is authentic? More than likely, you're not going to get some amazing deal on a 1914-D. There's so many counterfeit and problem 1914-D's in the market, you'd be crazy to buy a raw one over the internet unless it was a very reputible dealer. Buy your 1914-D by seeing it in person and only buy from a trusted source that would allow a return if you decdide you made a mistake. When you see these hacked, cracked and ugly key date Lincolns on ebay.....there's a reason. If it seems too good to be true, it certainly is.

Coin 1 Coin 2
I think some more people just learned a hard lesson. The second coin is so fake it's not funny. Somebody just lost $279.50!
