Hi everyone,

I'm a bit new to this, but working on a project cataloging various coins for sale on ebay. Most of them have been pretty straightforward, but there's one that's really got me stumped. It's a one-sided copper coin that appears to be dated ANNO 1672 (or possibly 1072, but the design looks too advanced for that.)

Here's a picture:

I posted this on another forum and one idea that was floated (no pun intended) was that it might relate to the Dutch "Year of Disasters," when they had to flood their dikes to fend off an invasion. Does anyone here have any familiarity with pieces like this? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for your time.

The second digit can't be a "0", unless it was made well after that date. "Western-style" numbers weren't introduced into Europe until the 1200's, and weren't in common use on coins until the late 1500's.

So the other side is completely blank? There's always the possibility that it's not a token, but rather a button or some similar artifact. Strange that a button would have a date on it like that, though.

It' supposed to be a rare token from Suriname, dated 1679, blank reverse. Rulau# Sur3.
Value listed as 'scarce', the more common variety with a tree reverse lists at $300 in VG.
