So what am I to do? Just picked up a box of nickels from Wells Fargo to go through and could see from the start that they were all BU! Of course I'm thinking goldmine if they are all 2009's, but no such luck, they're all 2008-D's. Is there money to be made if I put them up on ebay? What's a reasonable price per roll? They are all Fed wrapped String wrappers. Any advice would be appreciated. Unfortunately, I don't have enough posts yet for the BST forum here.

I don't know if there is a demand for them at the present time. I've been searching nickels myself and stumbled on a bunch of westward journey nickels (2004-2006). Some were Mint wrapped and some were String. I browsed ebay and the only ones selling were the Buffalos. I kept all the Mint wrapped just because somebody paid a premium for them and then dumped them at the bank? I kept the Buffalos but dumped 19 rolls of Keelboat in the Coinstar.

Hmmmmm, You have to do something with them. Either sell by the roll with a quantity available or sell the whole box. Find the lowest buy it now price on ebay ( lowest price incl. shipping ) and beat that price There were a bazillion 2008 nickels. If you sell by the roll, I would have to peel open a few rolls myself and see if there are any super high grade 2008 D examples in there. That would tell you a little bit about what to expect out of all of them. If you could find a few MS-69 or even a couple or one, and a handful of MS-68, you might be better off keeping the best 100 or 200 nickels and even dumping the rest. Me, I would probably go through them for the very nicest singles. They are only costing you the amount you have tied up in them, a nickel each. Wish I had your problem at your cost. ;-)

with wheezydog ... Had a similar 'problem' earlier this year when I came home with 10 rolls of nickels to find them all 2008-P BU coins. Keep in mind that there were 345,600,000 2008-D nickels minted (279,840,000 2008-P BTW) .... that's almost a million a day every day ..... so these are never going to show up on anybody's 'scarce in any condition list". That said ..... there will never be any more MS-65+ examples of these coins minted either ..... so .... here is what I did with my 10 rolls .... I opened five rolls and went through each coin very carefully .... kept the 'best' 12 and placed them in 2x2. Not sure of the grade .... I'm still new at this .... but they appear to me to Full Step gems with very little bag nicks. Dumped the other BU from those 5 rolls at my bank ..... and have set five rolls aside for a time later when I am wiser about what I am looking at. It's a nice problem to have IMHO. Set a roll aside and when you get to 50 posts I'll trade you one of my 'p' for one of you 'd'. David

The reason why the 2009-D Nickels are still locked up in the Fed, is that the Fed is still sending out boxes of 2008-D Nickels (at least here in Denver!). I got BU 2008-D Nickels in change this month from Walgreens, Chipotle and Home Depot. (the Walgreens near me has been getting BU rolls of 2008-D Nickels in their cash drawers at least once a month, for this whole year!

Well I went ahead and listed 20 of 'em in 2 roll bundles...guess we'll see what it brings. Only did a buy it now, not gonna give 'em away. :) I'll probably give Wheezy's recommendation a shot and crack a few and see what they hold.

DylansDad I would be interested in a report on the quality you found in those gently opened rolls.

Could someone please explain to this newbie what a 2008-D BU Nickel is?

Quote: Could someone please explain to this newbie what a 2008-D BU Nickel is? 2008 nickel, minted at the Denver mint in Brilliant Uncirculated condition. 2008-D is shorthand for 2008 Denver. BU is a condition on the scale, and it would mean the coin is very shiny with no marks on it (or very minor marks if it is regular circulation coinage).

I tell ya so far (2 rolls in) I'm not too impressed, this new Jefferson design gets dinged so quickly, I've set aside about 7 or 8 of them so far, but even those have some hits. I'll keep pushing through them though it is interesting though, I'll update again.

Been a busy couple of weeks so haven't had much chance to search these rolls. Last night I finally had a chance to commit a couple hours to it. So I'm half way through the box and have pulled out 52 of the 2008-D's that are in high MS condition (IMHO). I'll reiterate it is crazy difficult to find clean specimens in this BU uncirculated box. So if I've got 52 of these, do you think I'd have any luck trying to sell them to a coin shop? I realize it would maybe be $.10 each, but beats the $.05 I've got in 'em.
