I've been lurking awhile and thanks for all the great info but now I need some help.

I sold this coin awhile ago and the person I sold it to just contacted me and said he was a t a coin show and a bunch of people there said it was fake.

Now I know it was removed from a bezel and has been "rubbed" and maybe even "polished."

Can anyone tell me if they think it is a counterfeit?

I am going to have them send it back and get it independently verified and if it is a fake I will give them a full refund.

Welcome to the forum!

Every date of the $3 gold series has been extensively counterfeited. Many of the fake coins are made of the correct 90%-gold alloy and closely duplicate the features of real coins. Third-party certification of your coin is the best way to ensure it is genuine. If you believe it to be a genuine example, you might want to send it to ANACS for grading. The defects (jewelry mount, cleaning) will not prevent them from determining whether it is authentic.

Please post images. Discussion about your coin can be a worthwhile learning opportunity for the forum members!

Well, I thought I had a link to a youtube video of the coin, maybe you arent allowed to do that here and they took it off, otherwise I'll put it up.

Here are images of a genuine 1857 three-dollar coin from a Heritage auction. This coin was graded MS-61 by PCGS. From what I can see, your coin is a pretty good match. The subtle details typical of struck counterfeits (such as indistinct edges on letters and numbers and presence of tool marks from the counterfeit die manufacture process) can't be judged from your images.

You coin appears in pretty good shape for an ex-jewelry piece. It is well worth the submission fee to have it graded. In my opinion ANACS is your best choice based on their reputation for accurate Counterfeit Detection.

Maybe you can negotiate with your buyer. Ask him to pay for an ANACS submission. If it slabs he should be satisfied. If it is determined to be a fake, I think you should offer to buy it back at the original purchase price.

thats a great idea having him send it to anacs.

My current policy is "If any of our coins are ever certified fakes, replicas or counterfeits by PCGS, NGC, or ANACS we will offer a complete refund including shipping.
If you have an accredited professional coin expert document it a fake, replica or counterfeit and we can verify
the accuracy of the assessment we will offer a complete refund including shipping."
Rest in Peace

Hello twostaff. I actually inadvertently purchased a $3 fake gold coin several years ago on ebay, and therefore did a lot of research on the coin itself. Actually I have several threads regarding that coin, but here is a picture of it.

From what I can see, I believe yours is likely fake as well, albeit a better fake than mine(if it is). I could be wrong. What concerns me particularly is that some of the denticals appear to be mis-shapen and not uniform. However, it's hard to tell and would need better pics to be sure it isn't just lighting. It is likely real 90% gold, as most of the better $3 indian fakes are, so it would at least be worth melt. Hopefully I'm wrong, but good luck!
