Tonight while 2nd looking todays keys, I offered my two little girls (avery and abby) ( 11 and 7 ) ,. . the oppertunity to put todays 1983's on the digital scale and tell me if it ever told them a '3' instead of a '2'. then "THREE! !" they yell!. I asked whats the date, to which they both replied "82". I told them that was right for that year.
Then, the oldest got a paper and pencil and began to have her sister weigh each coin, and she would then write the date and weight.
The next thing she tells me is that there's one that weighs 2.5 grams. Again I ask "What year?". And MUCH to my supprise, she tells me "It's a 1982!".
I ask for it to see for myself the date , and it's a 1982! Next, I zero the scale and weigh it for myself. And a steady 2.5 grams shows again and again. So I ask myself, "Self, are you sure about date and weight for 82?". I know thats why we were scaling the 83's to begin with and books say 3.11 is correct.
So, with that guy's, should my girls be excited or not? ? ? ? ?
The coin is most definatly NOT a thin planchet by any comparasson either.

Some more good words would great to hear from any of you cornerstones in our forum! But, I won't get the girls hopes up till I hear otherwise. Amd a 'Thanks' to my fellow sophisticates.
Oh yeah, Pictures available upon request.

Copper cents (3.11 grams) were minted in 1982. The change to zinc (2.5 grams) was made during 1982, so you have both compositions (and weights) to be found dated 1982. Just a note...I weigh all my 82's to seperate out the copper and I've seen the weights range between 2.99-3.17 grams on the coppers)
Rest in Peace

No excitement yet unless you find a 1982 zinc cent(2.5 gms) small date with a DDR. Then you will whoop and holler !

I almost feel guilty being the one to dump the bucket of cold water on the excitement but 82 had both planchets so both weights can be found 2.5 and 3.11 depending on the material used. (7 varieties for the 1982 LMC)

83's should all weigh 2.5

eeek, I almost want to just ignore the thread so I don't have to hit the "submit reply" button and ruin the party.

Well, I was too slow. Others nailed it before I did.....but at least this way I can point at THEM as the being the wet blanket.

Good luck with the hunt.

Here is an example of a normal and DDO one from that year. See if this helps?

It's not a bad idea to weigh out the 82-D small date, since there is only 82-D small date zinc known to have been minted. The possibility of finding an 82-D small date copper isn't all that far fetched really, but it would definitely be a unique and significant find (in my opinion).

The 7 type set of 1982 Lincolns might be a fun one for your girls. It is not as easy as you might think to put together a whole set in BU, roll searching. The classic plating problems with the 1980 cents is enough to make it tough. On top of that both the small dates from Philly are seemingly scarce in comparison to the Denver small date. Either large date from either mint seems plentiful in either copper or zinc.

Here is what the 7 types are if you're interested.

1982-P sm date Copper
1982-P LG date Copper
1982-P sm date Copper plated Zinc
1982-P LG date Copper plated Zinc

1982-D LG date Copper
1982-D sm date Copper plated Zinc
1982_D LG date copper plated Zinc

Then of course you'll just have to get the 1982-S Large date proof, or lose countless nights of sleep. Up to you.
