I thought each of the different 29 designs of 50 pence for the 2012 Olmpics were going to be released in circulation.

http://www.royalmint.com/Corporate/...-2009_1.aspx

The above states: In total, 29 winning designs will be selected - each depicting a different Olympic or Paralympic sport - and will feature on the back of millions of 50 pence pieces from March 2010.

Where did you obtain the information that the first one (the Blue Peter one) was not going to be released?

If so, this means that we will need to pay £1.99 plus shipping for the first 50 pence in the series.

I don't remember anything about it not being released into circulation. I thought someone said that it would be released at the same time as the other 50ps which will be at the end of this year.

Though, just wait until all the coins come out in a set and buy them then. They send the different products separatly, but they only charge once for the postage, weird.

Even the free (and pathetic) England football medal has the postage, as if anyone is going to pay the postage for that rubbish.

About the Olympic 50p's I think they're going to sell some bunc examples directly from the mint before releasing them to public. A very easy way to make profit, aye!

A shame about no 2009 or 2010 Royal Shield 50 pence coins. So far the only year you can make a full Royal Shield set from circulation is 2008.

Yes..it's definitely a shame.. post office never had a problem with commemorative stamps issued in time..
it is very lazy of Royal Mint to stay short on dates.
plus, have you ever noticed that the shield 2p's and 20p's have too many Cuds?

The problem with 50ps is that people don't use them as much as other coins. Xmas is the time when most are used due to special offers. Say a place sells everything ending in .99 then they never use 50ps unless someone buys more than 50 items at one time. But when it is sale time, then things are halved in price, and therefore more 50ps are used.

Considering the US uses 1, 5, 10 and 25 cent as the only coins, we have twice as many denominations!

I've never noticed a lack of 50p's in my change. Not everything is priced at 99p. As I look in my pocket at the moment I have 6 of them. There are probably official minting figures available that would give a better indication of what's "floating around"

I've usually a large number of 50p, simply because something I buy on a regular basis costs £2.50. (OK it's beer, my other hobby).
I always make a point of paying with a note just so I get at least one 50p in change, but this does show some interesting anomalies. From December to mid january it was 90% Olympics, but in the last week I've received 3x 2007 (Scouts), 1 x 1998 (EU), 1 x 2006 (VC) & 1 x 2003 (Suffragettes)
Also Brunel & DNA £2s.
