I found this 1/4 balboa someone had used as a quarter. I traded it out and it looks like it isn't worth much $$$ but I like it just the same I always enjoy finding darkside coins in tills. God Bless, Brad Moved to World Coins forum - SapEdited by soldier4Christ 12/07/2009 12:53 am

its worth a quarter, panama's currency is pegged to the dollar 1 to 1. They even use us currency there along side their own (they dont have any paper balboas). Ones before 1966 have premium since their made of silver. I've found a 2001 and a 1963 half balboa's while searching halves. -XoG

I believe these are also minted by the US Mint? Their coins are exactly the same weight, diameter, and composition.

I'm pretty sure that they are in fact made in the US, San Francisco I believe. Recently I found a Netherlands Antilles 25c coin in my change, I think I got it in place of a nickel.

There are close to seventy different countries the US mints have made coins for in the past. The number of different coins and planchets is about 2,000. It's a fun collection and fairly inexpensive. I've completed about a dozen countries and have about 500 coins to go. Terrell

I remember now, my Mom got me a Panama 1/2 Balboa out of the til at her work when I was a kid (I'd guess around 1980 or so). Someone spent it as a 50c piece.

Quote: I believe these are also minted by the US Mint? Their coins are exactly the same weight, diameter, and composition. The older Panama coins were indeed to some extent minted in the US. This particular type for example (Quarter Balboa Cu-Ni) was made by the US Mint until 1982. The later years (1983-93) and the more recent types (1996, 2001) were produced in Canada. Christian
