Was checking out auctions today on ebay and it seems the fake Trade dollars have truly saturated the marketplace. I see many of these with bids of one or two dollars being totally ignored. Good to see people are realizing what these are and not turning over good money for nothing.

How can you tell that a Trade dollar auction is fake?

The Trade dollar is probably the most widely faked series of US coins. A vast majority of Asian listings for Trade $ are fakes and even quite a few of US listings are fake as well. Some listings are for impossible date/mintmark combos or ungodly rare issues (1884 & 1885 for instance). The fakes are sometimes castings made of lead or other white metals and will have a different color from a silver Trade dollar. The surface will have a granular appearance from the casting process I would go as far as saying NEVER buy a raw Trade dollar on ebay and only buy a certified Trade dollar on ebay from a reputable dealer.
Rest in Peace

Dog Man, you may have just observed a dip in the cycle. There's quite a few Trade dollars on ebay with what looks like a healthy dose of counterfeits. This China seller in particular has a LOT of "real" Trade dollars: http://cgi.ebay.com/real-1877-CC-SI...mZ8426851129

I would guess that a lot of the other Trade dollars being offered are also fakes being sold by buyers who themselves were taken for a ride and are trying to get a little something back.

As biokemist stated, I wouldn't buy a raw Trade dollar on ebay unless I was deliberately looking for a counterfeit for educational purposes.
