I've been reading through of posts on this thread and I've seen a few references to fake NGC coins. TPGs are new to me so I would love any advice you have on telling a real from a fake.

Thanks,

Clinton

I am also very interested in this topic. I am a new coin collector. Although I know "buy the coin not the slab", I do not have the needed skills to determine whether a coin is fake. Thus, I am a guy buying the slab not the coin. ......

Below please find some relevant information.

Well, it really depends on the coin. If you buy raw, as long as you buy from a well-known, trusted dealer, you should be fine. I only buy slabs if it is a very valuable or heavily counterfeited piece. You definitely have to be careful though. I've never bought a slab before, and raw coins are better in my opinion. I'll have to buy a slab soon though when I buy the 16-D Mercury or some of the rare coins in my 7070. There is usually no need to buy slabs when purchasing common date and grade coins.

The top grading services have had major changes to their slabs over the years so it can be difficult to tell what is real or not. You may see a slab that does not match a current one yet it may be ten years old and a completely different style. Fortunately, grading companies sometimes give out samples at shows, called sample slabs.

The best defense NGC has implemented is the new holder and the photo certification. Any coin in the new holder, has a photo you can compare it to

The new holder also has a colour hologram and another security feature only visible with a UltraViolet light (Blacklight)

I think another good tool for NGC is the online verifying tool. You can go to their website on your PC or if you are at a show, you can point your mobile browser to http://m.ngccoin.com and put in the certification number and it will tell you if it is legit.

The online version is better, since it has the photos if they exist.. but it seems to go down every night (server is doing database maintenance?)
