I have 2015 Mint and Baby Mint sets with the small SD while I think the 2015 Proof has the tiny SD 5 cents.

Yeah I think my 2015 mint set has the small SD (as opposed to the tiny SD) and I think my 2016 baby set might be the same?

Sorry to hear about all your misfortunes Brissyboy.
Agent 86, I don't get that magazine I may need to I think. Is that where your references to 'rev a,b,c' etc comes from?

Thanks Hans and others.

The Australasian Coin & Banknote October 2016 article on the "A Survey of Australian Five Cents Die Varieties" by Dr. Peter Andrews is very interesting and informative. He has used measurement techniques not available to me at the time that I and also Lyndsay Begodni were reporting on 5 cent die varieties. We still believe though, there are differences between the 1981 RAM and RM dies.

Also there are the changes to the obverse dies in the mid 1970s when changes were made to the back of the Queen's hair and later in 2000, 2001 and 2010 to the font of the text on the obverse.

hans be quick as next month's issue will probably be out by the end of the week.
The reverse letters are detailed in the article and there are probably some old threads on here that have similar classifications.

I have just subscribed to the magazine, but it looks like the first issue will be the November one. If it isn't illegal, could someone copy the article and post it here or pm me for details? Hope this isn't too rude a request for this newbie...

I suspect agent86 may be the author as his figures look similar to those in the article.

Have you tried contacting the Editor of the Magazine. I would be very surprised if there aren't any back copies available. The article covers 7 pages.

auscoinbank@bigpond.com

..or depending where you are, try some local Coin Stores.

A special thanks to John at The Australasian Coin and Banknote magazine for getting me the October back issue. Thanks for the tip Nancy.
It is interesting that the very thorough article makes no mention of the Type 5 variety with the finer lettering and the spaced spines. Is this not a 'real' variety for some reason?

Just a question which the forum members might be able to help with

I have noticed that in many denominations PCGS assign a unique number and class for issues from different mints of the same year

For example 1966 (c) and 1966 (l) - differentiating between the mints where these 5 cent coins were struck.

Is there any reason this is not the case for the 1981 5 cent struck in Canada as there seems to be conclusive means of identifying these coins

Cally, as far as I know the Winnipeg Mint is (W) or (RCMW) and The Royal Mint at Llantrisant in Wales is (Ll) or (RMLl). The minting of New Zealand coins are also relevant here as both Winnipeg and Ottawa struck coins and London and Llantrisant as well as Canberra did both circulation and mint un-circulated coinage for our island neighbours.
