I was roll searching my first box of quarters for silver. And found what I first thought was a proof yet no s mint mark. This coin is not copper as their are several deep dings and scratches that do not show any copper. And it is not silver, it doesn't ring right or feel like silver. The coin has a sticky feeling like that of cast zinc or tin. Has anyone come across any counterfeits like this before ?
I have had lots of experience handling various metals and it feels a lot like a tin and antimony solder alloy.

Any help would be appreciated.

When I worked as a Mgr in a store that got alot of change from Brinks, I used to scan the rolls for Silver. I found 4 or 5 Counterfeit quarters (and 1 dime). All were crudely made and were probably lead. I could bend them with my fingers. Yours looks alot better than the ones I found. Mine made a thud when dropped on a hard surface.

Here's a stupid question.

Kids used to separate the foil from the paper on gum or cigarette
wrappers and stick it on coins.

Could this just be foil adhered to it?
Time don't fly, it bounds and leaps.

At this time I am not convinced it is a fake, but rather that it is altered.

I've seen a lot of people talk about rubbing mercury on coins to make them "shiny". I've seen such coins but they are not a prevalent as some people say. This piece on the other hand does seem to possibly be such a coin. The mercury/copper/nickel amalgam that would form on the surface would probably give the "sticky feeling like that of cast zinc or tin" that the OP mentioned.
