Hi All,
I'm in the process of selling a few of my duplicate mint proof set on ebay. I haven't check this close since I bought it from the mint years ago. I check the first set and was just plain, then my second set I notice the North Carolina and the Kentucky has what looks to be doubled die.

I have try using my digital camera and scanner to no success, until I used my digital microscope and turn off the LED lighting to get it right. Here's what I like other to see and what other opinions on this North Carolina Quarter first, than I will post the Kentucky in a separate post. I was having a tough time to get these pictures as what I see from my loupe.

Machine Doubling - same reason as the other one. Flattened serifs and no notching.

This drawing I made might help. Yours is classic Machine Doubling, and the valuable ones are hub doubling...called "doubled dies" - NOT "double dies".

One thing to note since the turn of the 21st century- the Mint has gone to a single-squeeze hubbing process so doubled dies with large peripheral spreads are no longer possible. The old-school monster doubled dies(1955 and 1972 Lincoln DDOs to name a couple) were created with a two part hubbing process- the die was hubbed once, annealed to soften it, and then hubbed again. This secondary hubbing could be out of alignment and that was the cause of large spreads. In the single squeeze era, doubled dies are predominantly confined to the details in the center of the coin.

lafaa123 - The coin is definitely NOT a doubled die. It is not worth any premium value.

I agree with Chuck....Completely. The coin has Machine Doubling visible and that is not at all uncommon on proof coins. It's even on many slabbed MS-70 proof coins and it shouldn't be. So if you are buying slabs marked as such, throw them back if Machine Doubling is visible.
