I know there are a lot of folks here (including me) who search rolls of half dollars for silver. Having said that how many of you are actively cherrypicking halves searching for double die errors and uncirculated coins as well?

Since half dollars don't circulate much I have found several choice coins over the years and have built a couple very nice sets from circulation.

Some of the dates on Kennedy half dollars have very low mintages which leads me to believe long term there is value there. I consider mintages of 10 million or less to be "rare" as you do not see them very often when sorting half dollars. I actually keep all half dollars including those with minor damage and wear with a production of less than 15 million for that reason.

My advice to all of you silver hunters who do not keep the "junk" is to reevaluate your discard pile as a potential treasure trove of double die errors and uncirculated half dollars. You would not give the bank back a silver half so why give them back coins valued at $1.00 - $3.00? A few of those buys a silver half and a double die will buy you several! Sincerely, John Leckrone

Rest in Peace

Your words have validity but in my case, as in others, where do you get the halves? I find them at banks about 5% of the times I ask for them. I did make a small score in 2007. The bank told me someone had just brought in $100 worth. I took them and this is what I found:
1 90% Walker
4 90% Franklins
2 90% Kennedys
147 40% Kennedys

Of course that whetted my appetite for half rolls before the reality of not finding them set it. I keep looking however. Maybe this year again.

I look for errors as well and also keep those that were not minted for circulation.

I have the same problem, my bank never has any. Maybe I should try a new bank this year.

I agree with you John. I go thru 3 boxes minimum (I have a standing order with the bank)and will go thru each one of them. I do pull the 74's to look for the double dies, obviously keep the silvers, keep any proof (any condition) and am now keeping all NIFC coins. The way I look at, any non silver coin that I pull cost me .50 and I can always "sell" it back to the bank for the same amount.

I get all of my Kennedy halves either from the local coin shop or from the good folks on here. Never tried a bank as I never have that much disposable cash unfortunately.

Unfortunately, neither do I. But I'm not missing out on cheap silver. I grab up customer wrapped rolls from the banks. After the bills are paid for the month, I will utilize next months mortgage money to buy a box of halves.
I keep all silver & NIFC's. I do look for DDO 74D's (haven't found one yet) and put away nicer examples of lower mintage circulation strikes. Actually I'll save any extremely nice MS coin I find. I figure with all the Roll Searchers dumping in CoinStars and all the wrapping machines these halves go through they ain't going to get any prettier!

I love Kennedy Halfs ... my bank seldom has them, but when they do I grab them ... I actually keep every coin that has eye-appeal regardless of date and throw the rest back.

The issue with the low circulation Kennedy dollars is that they are exactly that... NIFC (Not Intended For Circulation). Thus, there are many in very high grade mint state and lots in PCGS and NGC slabs. Plus very few people put much stock in Kennedy halves beyond roll searching for silver and perhaps filing out a cheap folder with circulated or low-grade MS coins. My point? I don't think they will every really be worth much.
