That look like a repunched mint mark to me. I am guessing that because the second one is rotated to north, is not Machine Doubling were it spread evenly.

The doubling is plainly visible on the first two 9's. However a closeup might be needed.

With that much of a spread on the two middle digits, why isn't the one and last nine affected and what about the mint mark,no spread there?I thought after 1989 the date and mint mark had to be doubled for it to be a doubled die.

If it were a doubled die, the mint mark would also be affected. I suspect a very worn die. Usually die wear shows towards the rim. More picture would probably help. But that is what I suspect is going on with this coin.

I would think a repunch is out of the question. It is very interesting though

lftbolol,

I would try turning off the LED light if you are using the digital microscope, use a over head lamp that's about 2 feet plus above and ahead of you. When you do take the next shots, be sure not to cast shadow of yourself over the coin. I found that I take better pictures like that.

If you have a scanner, perhaps give that a shot too! Hope this help.

It's die wear. A bit unusual in appearance, but that's what it is.

You welcome! Odd that you don't have the on/off switch with your digital microscope.
